Open pergola
Filtered shade, either freestanding or attached to the house.
Covered pergola / patio cover
A solid roof of metal or shingles to match the house, with gutters to carry the water away.
The stained-wood covered patio in the photo on this page was built by our crew: stained-wood posts on stone column bases, tied into a two-story brick home.
What a roofer does differently
- Flashing where the new roof meets your existing roof or wall, which is the most common leak spot on patio covers
- Roof pitch and gutters planned so water doesn't sheet onto the patio or foundation
- Roof material matched to the house, such as standing seam or impact-rated shingles
- A design built for wind on open lots and lakefronts
[CONFIRM: pergolas, outdoor kitchens & pool houses: built by your own crew or a named partner? Who does electrical, plumbing and gas (licensed trades in Texas)?]
Permits and HOAs
Many cities require a permit for attached patio covers and larger accessory structures, and HOAs often review them. We'll help you figure out what's needed before the build starts.
