Slate & shake look

Slate-Look and Shake-Look Shingle Roofs

Natural slate and cedar shake look great, but they're heavy, expensive, and take a lot of upkeep. Slate-look and shake-look shingles give you most of that look at a lower weight and cost. Like every shingle roof Snow Roofing & Exteriors installs, these are rated Class 3 or better, with Class 4 available.

Why people choose the look-alike

  • Weight. Natural slate can call for a structural review before it goes on. Slate-look shingles go on a standard roof deck.
  • Maintenance. No splitting, rot, or re-treating like real wood shake.
  • Hail. They carry a UL 2218 impact rating, and many come in Class 4.
  • Cost. Usually well below natural slate or real shake. We'll quote both if you want to compare.

Composite shake: the real-wood look without the wood

For a true shake look, we also install composite shake. On a large new ranch estate in Clay County near Bellevue and Bowie, we installed Enviroshake, a manufactured composite shake made mostly from recycled polymers, natural fibers and elastomers and molded from real cedar shakes. The manufacturer lists a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating for it. See the Clay County project.

Natural slate and tile

If your home already has a natural slate or tile roof, matching and repairing it is a specialty job. [CONFIRM: do you still repair / install natural slate and clay or concrete tile? (the current site lists them)]

What we'll need from you

Photos of the home and any HOA rules on materials and colors. We'll bring samples so you can see them against your brick or stone in daylight.

Frequently asked questions

Do slate-look shingles hold up to hail?

The slate-look and shake-look shingles we install are impact-rated Class 3 or better under UL 2218, and Class 4 options are available. No roof is hail-proof, but rated products resist impact far better than unrated ones.

Can I put slate-look shingles on a house built for regular shingles?

Usually yes. Slate-look shingles weigh far less than natural slate, so they normally go on a standard roof deck. We confirm the deck condition during the inspection.
