Three product lines, one manufacturer
Enviroshake
The cedar alternative. Enviroshake says the profile replicates taper-sawn cedar shakes and is developed from 3D images of real shakes.
Enviroslate
A lightweight slate look with the texture of quarried slate, for homes where real slate's weight is a problem.
EnviroShingle
The company's third roofing collection. We'll bring samples so you can compare all three on your house.
What Enviroshake publishes about performance
These are the manufacturer's own published figures, from enviroshake.com (checked Nov 3, 2026). We'll hand you the current documents for your exact product before you sign.
- Impact: rated Class 4 under UL 2218, the highest impact class for roof coverings.
- Fire: Class A and Class C ratings are available, tested to ASTM E108 / UL 790. Which one you get depends on the product and assembly, so ask us about Class A.
- Wind: third-party tested to 180 mph under ASTM D3161.
- Material: about 95% recycled content, including post-industrial plastics, elastomers and cellulose fiber, and engineered to resist rot, mold and insects with no sealing or refinishing.
- Warranty: Enviroshake advertises a transferable 50-year limited lifetime material warranty. Per Enviroshake, the roof must be installed by a Factory Trained Installer and registered to qualify.
No roof is hail-proof. A Class 4 rating means the product passed a standard steel-ball test, not that it can't be damaged by every storm. Texas insurers must offer a premium credit for roof coverings rated under UL 2218, but the Texas Department of Insurance says each company sets its own amount, and a Class 4 rating earns the largest credit. We can't promise a discount. Ask your insurer for their figure in writing before you choose. After a qualifying install we fill out TDI Form PC068 for you.
Why it fits Westlake, Southlake, Colleyville and the Park Cities
Homes in Westlake, Southlake, Colleyville, Trophy Club, Highland Park and University Park are often designed around a natural-material look: Hill Country stone, Tudor and English cottage, French country, and modern farmhouse. Those styles call for shake or slate. North Texas also gets frequent hail, which is hard on wood shakes and can crack natural slate. A composite with a published Class 4 rating lets you keep the architecture without choosing a fragile material.
Enviroshake vs. real cedar, slate and tile
| Enviroshake / Enviroslate | Real cedar shake | Natural slate | Clay or concrete tile | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Shake or slate profile, weathers toward gray | Authentic wood | Authentic stone | Mediterranean and Spanish styles |
| Upkeep | No sealing or refinishing, per manufacturer | Treating, and replacing split or curled shakes | Low, but broken slates need a slate specialist | Low, but the underlayment wears out under the tile |
| Weight | Light (Enviroslate is sold as a lightweight slate look) | Light | Very heavy; framing may need checking | Heavy |
| Hail | UL 2218 Class 4, per manufacturer | Prone to splitting | Can crack; pieces replaced one at a time | Can crack; broken tiles replaced |

HOA appeal
Many DFW HOAs and architectural review committees write their rules around how a roof looks: profile, color and texture. Composite shake and slate are made to read as natural materials from the street, which can help your application. Each HOA decides for itself, so we'll give you the product sheets, color samples and ratings to submit before work begins. Don't order material until you have the approval in writing.
