About McKinney
McKinney is the Collin County seat, 32 miles north of Dallas. The first two years of the county's history it had a different seat, Buckner, which wasn't within three miles of the county's center as the Legislature required, so a special election in 1848 chose McKinney by a ten-to-one vote. Census estimates show it growing from about 195,300 residents in 2020 to 236,000 in 2025.
