The basics
- 29-gauge is the thin, common panel at big-box stores and on many barns
- 26-gauge is noticeably thicker and stiffer
- 24-gauge is heavier still, used on some architectural and commercial jobs
Why thickness matters in North Texas
- Hail: thicker steel dents less. Every metal roof we install is Class 4 impact rated.
- Oil-canning: stiffer panels show less waviness on wide, flat pans
- Walkability and spans: stiffer panels handle foot traffic and purlin spans better
- Wind: stiffer panels and better clip hold
When 29-gauge shows up
It's common on low-cost sheds and some exposed-fastener barns. If you're comparing bids, check the gauge on every quote, because it's one of the easiest ways for a price to drop.
