Class 4 Metal Roofs and Your Texas Insurance

Hail is the reason many North Texas homeowners choose metal. Every metal roof we install is Class 4 impact rated under UL 2218, the highest rating there is. Here's how that rating, your insurance credit, and the fine print in your policy fit together.

How the credit works in Texas

Texas insurers must offer a premium credit for roof coverings rated under UL 2218, but the Texas Department of Insurance says each company sets its own amount, and a Class 4 rating earns the largest credit. We can't promise a discount. Ask your insurer for their figure in writing before you choose. After a qualifying install we fill out TDI Form PC068 for you.

In September 2026 TDI issued Bulletin B-0008-26 encouraging insurers to reward homeowners who strengthen their homes against wind and hail, including roofs built to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard. Ask your agent whether your company offers anything beyond the UL 2218 credit.

Check the rating on the exact panel

Ratings belong to a specific panel, gauge and assembly, not to "metal" in general. Before you sign, ask for the product's UL 2218 listing or test documentation. Every metal roof we install is Class 4 impact rated under UL 2218, including our 26-gauge standing seam and R-panel, and we give you the product paperwork for your insurer.

Read the cosmetic-damage clause

Some Texas policies exclude cosmetic hail damage on metal roofs: dents that don't let water in. That can be a fair trade for a lower premium, but you should know it's there. Ask your agent:

  • Is there a cosmetic damage exclusion or endorsement on metal roofs?
  • What credit do you give for a Class 4 roof, and do you need Form PC068?
  • Is my wind/hail deductible a percentage of the dwelling value? (An impact rating doesn't change your deductible.)

Metal or Class 4 shingles for insurance?

Both can earn the top credit. Metal usually lasts longer. Shingles cost less up front. See our comparison guide and the full Texas insurance discount guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do metal roofs get an insurance discount in Texas?

Every metal roof we install is Class 4 impact rated under UL 2218, which is the class that earns the largest credit. Each insurer sets its own credit, and Class 4 earns the largest. Ask your insurer for their figure in writing.

What is a cosmetic damage exclusion?

A policy provision that excludes dents or marks on a metal roof that do not affect its ability to keep water out. Not every policy has one. Ask your agent.

Will you fill out the Texas impact-resistant roofing form?

Yes. We complete TDI Form PC068 after a qualifying installation so you can send it to your insurer.

How much is the discount?

TDI says the amount is set by each insurance company, so we do not quote a percentage. Your agent can tell you the exact credit for your policy.
