Metal Roof Over Shingles

Putting a Metal Roof Over Shingles

Going over an existing shingle roof saves tear-off and disposal, and it's sometimes allowed. But it isn't always a good idea. Here's how we decide.

When it can work

  • Only one existing layer of shingles
  • Deck is solid, with no soft spots or rot
  • Building code and the panel manufacturer allow it
  • The panel system suits it: battens, purlins or an overlay product like Tilcor CF Shingle

When we recommend tear-off

  • Two layers already, or curled, lumpy shingles that would show through standing seam
  • Leaks that may have damaged the deck
  • Standing seam, where a flat substrate prevents oil-canning
  • You want to reset ventilation and underlayment properly

Insurance note

Some insurers treat an overlay differently. Every metal roof we install is Class 4 impact rated. Texas insurers must offer a premium credit for UL 2218 impact-rated roofs, but each company sets its own amount, and Class 4 earns the largest. We can't promise a discount; ask your insurer for their figure in writing. After a qualifying install we fill out TDI Form PC068 for you.

Your estimate will show both options when both are possible. See cost factors.

Residential warranty: a 10-year transferable workmanship warranty, with manufacturer warranties up to lifetime. Manufacturer coverage depends on the product and brand, and on the project qualifying for that manufacturer's program. We put the exact warranty for your roof in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a metal roof over shingles?

Sometimes: usually over a single layer, on a sound deck, where code and the manufacturer allow it. We inspect before recommending it.

Does an overlay save money?

It saves tear-off and disposal, but it can hide deck problems. We show both options in your estimate.

Is standing seam OK over shingles?

We usually recommend tear-off for standing seam, since a flat substrate looks and performs better.
