Frisco custom homes — and a lot of the bigger roofs next door in Keller and Prosper — often want a slate look without the weight, cost and crew specialized for natural slate. Owens Corning’s answer in that lane is Berkshire: a large-tab laminated shingle built to read as slate from the street.
I’m Blake Snow. I’ve been roofing for 30 years and I’m certified with Owens Corning. Here’s how I walk Frisco owners through Berkshire using Owens Corning’s published brochure and warranty materials — and how I talk about Woodmoor without inventing a discontinuation story.
What Berkshire is (from Owens Corning’s own numbers)
Owens Corning’s Berkshire brochure describes Berkshire as a modern slate-look laminated shingle with color-matched Berkshire Hip & Ridge. Published product specifications:
| Spec | Berkshire (OC brochure) |
|---|---|
| Nominal size | 18-3/4” × 38” |
| Weight per square | ~360 lb |
| Exposure | 8-3/8” |
| Shingles per bundle | 9 |
| Count / coverage | 45 shingles (5 bundles) ≈ 99.5 sq. ft. |
| Fire | ASTM E108 / UL 790 Class A |
| Wind tests listed | ASTM D3161 Class F; ASTM D7158 Class H |
| Hip & ridge | Color-matched Berkshire Hip & Ridge (12” × 10-5/8” pieces, 8” exposure) |
That short-ish exposure and tall tab are why Berkshire roofs look deeper than a standard Duration or Oakridge field. On a 40-square Frisco roof you are looking at roughly 14,400 lb of shingles alone — heavier than a typical architectural laminate, lighter than real slate. Confirm framing and prior layers before anyone nails it over an old roof.
Warranty language Owens Corning publishes
From the same Berkshire brochure (always defer to the live warranty PDF for your color and plant):
- Limited Lifetime warranty for as long as you own your home (see actual warranty for details and limitations)
- 130 mph Wind Resistance Limited Warranty
- 15-year Algae Resistance Limited Warranty with StreakGuard protection
- 10-year TRU PROtection non-prorated limited warranty period
Owens Corning’s broader roofing warranty page explains how Standard vs. Extended coverage, component counts and Preferred / Platinum Preferred contractor status change TRU PROtection length and workmanship terms. A Berkshire field with random starter and hip caps is not the system that chart describes. Put starter, underlayment, hip & ridge and ventilation on the same page as the shingle.
Limited availability — say it before you sell it
Owens Corning’s Design EyeQ tool still lists Berkshire with a limited availability note, and regional stock has been tight in past runs. I will not write a Frisco contract around Berkshire until the distributor confirms color, plant and delivery window. If lead time slips, the honest alternatives in the same designer conversation are other OC lines you can actually get, or a different brand’s slate-look laminate — not a surprise substitution on install day.
Woodmoor: current product, regional relaunch — not a made-up discontinuation
Owners sometimes ask about Woodmoor in the same breath as Berkshire because both sit in Owens Corning’s premium / designer conversation (Berkshire = slate look; Woodmoor = thicker shake look).
What I can cite today:
- Owens Corning’s live Woodmoor product page lists nominal size 14-1/4” × 40”, 4” exposure, 90 shingles per square, 6 bundles per square, 100 sq. ft. coverage.
- Roofing Contractor reported on January 28, 2026 that Owens Corning relaunched the Woodcrest & Woodmoor collection for the Western and Mountain regions of the U.S., orderable as of January 1, 2026, with nature-inspired colors including Carbon, Granite, Sycamore, Chestnut, Mesquite and Timber (article).
- IRE 2026 coverage from the same publisher also notes Class 4 impact upgrades on the relaunched lines for Western U.S. contractors — verify the current TDS for the exact rating before you sell Class 4 in a DFW bid.
I am not claiming Woodmoor is discontinued nationwide, and I am not inventing a kill date. For a Frisco / Keller / Prosper job I treat Woodmoor as confirm-with-distributor: the product page exists, the 2026 relaunch was regional, and North Texas stock is a supply question, not a blog rumor. This post keeps the primary focus on Berkshire.
What Frisco bids should include
- Product identity. Berkshire color name, hip & ridge product, starter and underlayment — not “Owens Corning designer.”
- Structural check. ~360 lb/sq is a real load on a steep Frisco elevation with multiple layers still on the deck.
- HOA / ARC. Frisco and Prosper committees often care about color blend and roof form; bring boards, not phone photos.
- Hail expectations. Asphalt limited warranties do not cover hail. If Class 4 impact resistance is a must-have for insurance credit, verify the current Owens Corning literature for the exact product you are buying — do not assume every designer laminate carries the same UL 2218 class.
- Whole-system quote. Ventilation, flashings and valley metal decide whether a 360 lb/sq slate-look roof looks premium or just heavy.
Our Owens Corning designer shingles page compares Berkshire, Woodmoor and Woodcrest at a high level. For the broader designer lane see designer and luxury shingles. For hail documentation see storm damage.
