Slate on Colleyville homes
TSHA notes that Colleyville, incorporated in 1956 on State Highway 26 in northeastern Tarrant County, grew from 12,724 residents in 1990 to 22,807 in 2010, and the Census Bureau estimates about 25,727 today. That growth left a mix of larger-lot custom homes and mid-size suburban streets, and slate shows up most often on the custom and Mediterranean-leaning houses where owners plan to stay through another shingle cycle — or already have a slate roof that needs honest repair rather than a tear-off.
Natural slate or synthetic slate?
| Natural slate | Synthetic slate | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Quarried stone, split by hand (see quarries and brands) | Polymer or composite tiles made to look like slate, such as DaVinci or Enviroslate |
| Weight | Heavy. The framing has to be checked before we specify it | Much lighter, so most homes need no structural changes |
| Hail | Thicker slate holds up well, but large hail can still crack it | Many products carry a Class 4 impact rating; check the exact product |
| Repairs | Individual slates can be replaced for decades | Pieces can be replaced, but colors and lines change over time |
We'll tell you honestly which makes sense for your house, your HOA, and how long you plan to stay. Our synthetic vs. real slate guide goes deeper.
Hail and slate in northeast Tarrant County
NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 1.5-inch hail at Colleyville on May 27, 2024, and Tarrant County logged more than 500 hail reports from 2016 through mid-2026, including 115 golf-ball size or larger and a 5-inch report in June 2023. In 2026 the Storm Prediction Center logged 1-inch hail just northwest of Grapevine on May 22 and in Grapevine on June 2, a few miles north. Hail can crack or chip slate, but slate also cracks from foot traffic, rusted nails and old repairs. Telling those apart matters, both for the repair and for any claim. If you file an insurance claim, we document the damage and meet your adjuster on the roof. Texas law requires you to pay your deductible, and a contractor may not waive, absorb or rebate it. We never will.
How we inspect a roof you can't walk like a shingle roof
Slate and tile break under the wrong footstep, so a careless inspection can cause the damage it's looking for. We plan a walk path, step only where the pieces are supported, use roof ladders and pads where needed, and fly a drone over the areas that aren't safe to walk. Every inspection comes with a free digital photo report, so you see what we see. The report separates old breaks, fresh breaks and installation problems, because they lead to very different answers.
Slate repair: matched, not patched
A good slate repair should be hard to find from the street. We match the slate's color, thickness and size, and we replace pieces with copper or stainless slate hooks or nail-and-bib methods instead of face-nailing and tar. When an original slate is no longer quarried, we look for salvaged stock or borrow pieces from a low-visibility slope. See slate roof repair.
Colleyville re-roof permits
The City of Colleyville requires a permit on all re-roof projects and requires roofing contractors to register with the city. The city's inspection covers the outside of the house and an attic check of vent piping and exhaust vents. Fees and steps change, so we confirm them with Building Inspections before your job starts.
