How a snap-lock seam works
- Clips are fastened to the deck along the edge of each panel (or the panel has a nailing flange)
- The next panel's leg is set over the first panel's leg
- Pressing along the seam snaps the legs together and locks them over the clips
- No screw goes through the flat of the panel, so no fastener is exposed to the sun
Clip, or nail strip?
| Clip-fastened snap-lock | Nail-strip (fastener flange) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fastening | Separate clips under the seam | Screws through a slotted flange on the panel edge |
| Thermal movement | Clips let long panels slide as they heat and cool | Fine for shorter runs; long runs move less freely |
| Typical use | Homes, long ranch roofs, lake houses | Shorter runs, porches, accent roofs |
General characteristics. The clip, spacing and run limits come from the panel manufacturer's installation guide.
Slope: where snap-lock stops
Snap-lock seams aren't built to sit under standing water, so they rely on slope to shed it. Many snap-lock panels are published for about 3:12 and steeper, and some taller seams are rated somewhat lower over a solid deck. Below the panel's minimum, a mechanically seamed panel is the right call. We check every slope on your roof against the published minimum before we quote.
Seam height and panel width
- Seam height: seams from 1 inch to about 1-3/4 inches are common. Taller seams look bolder and handle water and wind a little better.
- Panel width: narrower panels show less waviness (oil-canning) in the flat; wider panels cover faster.
- Striations or pencil ribs in the flat help hide oil-canning, especially in dark colors.
Snap-lock in North Texas weather
Here, wind uplift and hail matter more than seam looks. Clip spacing near eaves, rakes and corners, a full-coverage high-temperature underlayment and a heavier gauge all add up. Our panels are 24 or 26 gauge, never thinner. On open ranch land and lake lots, we'll tell you when a mechanically seamed panel is worth the extra cost.
What sets the price
- Roof size and the number of hips, valleys and dormers
- Gauge and paint system
- Tear-off, or going over the existing roof where code and the manufacturer allow
- Underlayment and ventilation
- Trim, flashing and painted pipe boots
