What a roll former does
A roll former feeds a flat coil of painted steel through a line of roller stations. Each station bends the steel a little more until a finished panel, with its ribs or seam legs, comes out the end and is cut to length. Change the length setting and the next panel comes out that size.
Why forming to length matters
| Shop panels, shipped | Formed to length by our crew | |
|---|---|---|
| Long runs | Often limited by shipping, so long runs may get spliced | Most runs go on in one piece, eave to ridge |
| End laps | Each splice is a sealed lap that can leak later | None on most runs |
| Fit | Cut to a list sent in ahead of time | Cut to what we measured on your roof |
| Handling | Loaded, shipped and unloaded, with chances to kink or scratch | Fewer moves between the machine and the roof |
| Schedule | Depends on the panel shop's queue | Depends on our crew |
Where it pays off most
- Warehouses and metal buildings with long eave-to-ridge runs. See warehouse roofing.
- Mini storage rows. See mini storage roofing.
- Long ranch roofs, shops and barndos. See barndos and shops.
- Complex homes, where every hip and valley cut needs a different length
Profiles and gauge
We form standing seam and R-panel in 24 or 26 gauge. Long panels need room to move with heat and cold, so long standing seam runs go down on clips that let them float. For low slopes and long commercial runs, see mechanically seamed standing seam.
The same people form it and install it
The crew that measures your roof forms and installs the panels, so mistakes get caught before they reach the roof and there's no finger-pointing between a panel shop and an installer. Most residential installs take one day. Read Blake's post on why we form our own metal panels.
More metal: snap-lock standing seam · mechanically seamed · commercial R-panel · 26 gauge · roll-formed to length · retrofit over an existing roof · back to metal roofing
